Absorto en una irresponsable ignorancia y complacencia el ser humano sigue sin querer percibir y ver todo aquello que deviene trascendente en nuestras vidas y que verdaderamente afecta y afectará a nuestro presente y a nuestro futuro.
La profunda crisis climática, la sobreexplotación de los recursos, las desigualdades sociales a escala mundial, la pérdida progresiva de derechos y libertades, las guerras locales o regionales o el ascenso de los fascismos a las instituciones democráticas forman parte de esa realidad a la que los seres humanos damos la espalda.
Todo ha quedado sometido a las leyes, normas y reglas del ser humano cuyo empeño en creerse el centro del universo le ha llevado a sojuzgar incluso a la naturaleza para convertirla en territorio, un espacio al servicio de sus propios deseos e intereses, aunque posiblemente muy pronto ya no le quede territorio que someter.
El planeta se muere y no se trata de una diatriba ecologista ni una frase exagerada. De verdad, se muere. Hemos esquilmado Africa, estamos esquilmando la selva amazónica, los polos se derriten, las temperaturas climáticas son cada vez más extremas, hemos sobreexplotado la pesca y la agricultura, las políticas mundiales para reducir la huella de carbono y el CO2 se aplazan una y otra vez y la industria pesada que lo genera no para de crecer.
Ya no existe un gran relato con el que el arte imaginaba el mundo, tan sólo nos queda la fotografía y su capacidad para sustituir ese gran relato extinto por pequeñas narraciones individuales, pequeñas porciones de aquel mundo que intentan hacernos entender mejor la propia realidad y nuestra propia existencia.
La serie Un crépuscule de Kai-Yun Catherene Lee (nacida en Taiwán, vive y trabaja en Montréal, Canadá) es una de esas narraciones que se erige como una denuncia contra la destrucción de nuestro hábitat natural, que nos enfrenta ante nuestra propia deriva y nos empuja a encontrar las respuestas que nos permitan desarrollar un destino salvador para la humanidad.
Sus imágenes nos hacen reflexionar sobre la necesidad de crear un futuro en concordia con el medio ambiente. Un futuro que nos permita conciliar en armonía nuestras vidas con las de los demás seres humanos y con la naturaleza. Un futuro que garantice a las generaciones que nos sigan el poder tener un hermoso hogar que les acoja y que les permita vivir en paz.
Para la humanidad, el tercer milenio marca el fin de las utopías, la de la igualdad para todos, la del liberalismo, la de un mundo limpio, la de una posible cohabitación armoniosa de los seres humanos con la naturaleza. Esta naturaleza, tantas veces dominada y oprimida, se rebela hoy y nos muestra los límites de los cambios que le hemos impuesto. Enfrentados a un monstruo que ha creado y que ya no puede controlar, los humanos modernos siguen rechazando la evidencia y eludiendo lo irreversible. Deambulan en busca de soluciones, dejando de lado todas las promesas. La naturaleza, tan silenciosa durante tanto tiempo, recupera poco a poco sus derechos, dejando a la humanidad desprovista de recursos; y es con elegancia y cierto desenfado como juega con todas las trampas que le han tendido. Los humanos avanzan ahora sin puntos de referencia, congelados en sus costumbres, en busca de ese contacto perdido que les permita reconectar con su mundo original. En esta serie sólo son testigos, objetos de un entorno que la naturaleza dibuja. Es ella la que ahora decide e impone, y sin embargo no expulsa completamente de su territorio a estas extrañas criaturas que tanto daño le han hecho. Absorbed in an irresponsible ignorance and complacency, human beings still do not want to perceive and see everything that is becoming transcendent in our lives and that truly affects and will affect our present and our future.
The profound climate crisis, the overexploitation of resources, social inequalities on a global scale, the progressive loss of rights and freedoms, local or regional wars or the rise of fascism in democratic institutions are all part of this reality to which we human beings turn our backs.
Everything has been subjected to the laws, norms and rules of human beings whose determination to believe they are the centre of the universe has led them to subjugate even nature in order to turn it into a territory, a space at the service of their own desires and interests, although very soon there may be no territory left to subjugate.
The planet is dying, and this is neither an environmentalist diatribe nor an exaggerated phrase. It really is dying. We have depleted Africa, we are depleting the Amazon rainforest, the poles are melting, climate temperatures are becoming more extreme, we have overexploited fisheries and agriculture, global policies to reduce our carbon footprint and CO2 are repeatedly postponed, and the heavy industry that generates it is growing all the time.
There is no longer a grand narrative with which art imagined the world, we are left only with photography and its capacity to substitute that grand narrative, which is now extinct, with small individual narratives, small portions of that world that try to make us better understand our own reality and our own existence.
The series “Un crépuscule” by Kai-Yun Catherene Lee (born in Taiwan, lives and works in Montreal, Canada) is one of those narratives that stands as a denunciation against the destruction of our natural habitat, that confronts us with our own drift and pushes us to find the answers that will allow us to develop a saving destiny for humanity.
Her images make us reflect on the need to create a future in harmony with the environment. A future that allows us to reconcile our lives in harmony with those of other human beings and with nature. A future that guarantees that the generations that follow us will be able to have a beautiful home that welcomes them and allows them to live in peace.
“For humanity, the third millennium marks the end of utopias, that of equality for all, of liberalism, of a clean world, of a possible harmonious cohabitation of human beings with nature. This nature, so often dominated and oppressed, today rebels, and shows us the limits of the changes that we imposed on her. Confronted with a monster they have created and can no longer control, modern humans continue to refuse the evidence and evade the irreversible. They wander in search of solutions, pushing aside all promises. Nature, so silent for so long, gradually regains her rights, leaving mankind destitute of resources; and it is with elegance and a certain casualness that she plays with all the traps that have been set for her. Humans now move forward without landmarks, frozen in their habits, in search of this lost contact that will allow them to reconnect with their original world. In this series they are only witnesses, objects of an environment that nature draws. It is she who now decides and imposes, and yet she does not completely expel from her territory these strange creatures who have done her so much harm.
