¡¡ 20 Aniversario ADFPHOTO !!

It would be easy to eradicate macho behaviour and attitudes after decades and decades in which men have imposed them in one way, shape or form. It would simply be a matter of commitment and perseverance. Unfortunately, however, many are not interested in changing their way of thinking and are convinced that such macho, patriarchal or misogynist behaviours are normal, customary and what is expected of a man.
In 1975, in the 20th century, I witnessed the abolition in my country of a law that obliged my wife to ask my written permission to open a deposit account in any bank or to carry out any financial transaction while married. It took three years for this abolition to take effect.
Books and books could be written about the past and, what is worse, current abuses of women’s or girls’ rights in relation to their education, the way they dress, the way they think or express their opinions, their equal pay for work equal to that of men or, what is unbearable, the violence and sexual abuse that is still tolerated and covered up today.
Today, 8 March, International Women’s Day is celebrated under the slogan: ‘For ALL women and girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment’. This year’s theme calls for expanding equal rights, power and opportunities for all, with a feminist future where no one is left behind. Empowering the next generation is at the heart of this idea, as youth, especially young women and adolescent girls, will be at the centre of lasting change in the future.
The “Women of the Water” series by photographer Ana Elisa Sotelo (born in Peru and raised in Bolivia, Mexico, USA, Chile and Argentina, she is an open water swimmer and member of the Peruvian sports group ‘Las Truchas’) is a tribute to the equality and empowerment of all women.
The series that was born at the end of the world, in Puerto Natales, Chile, in 2022 has expanded to different bodies of water in Peru, Argentina, Barbados and the United States and is an ongoing photographic project that explores women’s freedom and liberation. Through free and open calls, it invites women to collectively swim naked in open water.
Her images focus on gender narratives and how human beings interact with their environment, proposing that the viewer changes the way they perceive strength and femininity.
“In this photographic series I call on women to leave their inhibitions on the ground and experience a moment of connection, freedom and support in different bodies of water. Through the image I explore the concept of female freedom and liberation and seek to make both the participants and the viewer question social prejudices and the dominance of patriarchy over women and the nature that surrounds them. I also seek to expose the different forms of the female body, within a framework that invites the participants to show themselves as they are”.- Ana Elisa Sotelo.
