Brad Walls «Detached, in Harmony»

A veces no podemos encontrar el significado de la vida y en multitud de ocasiones nos resulta difícil y complejo tratar de descubrir los porqués de los acontecimientos que nos surgen en nuestra existencia.

Durante los últimos años la humanidad entera se ha visto envuelta, en mayor o menor medida, por acontecimientos que han desbordado ampliamente la capacidad de cualquier ser humano para tratar de comprender lo que estaba sucediendo.

Hemos vivido atónitos y aterrados la gran crisis económica de 2008, después la pandemia de Covid-19 en 2020 y ahora muy recientemente, hace poco más de un mes, la guerra de Putin con la invasión a Ucrania que ha desestabilizado a la globalización y a la economía mundial.

Seguimos empeñados en mantener un sistema de vida basado en el consumo feroz de bienes y servicios; en la obtención inmoral de beneficios que en ocasiones sobrepasan el 1000 o 2000 por ciento en favor de unas pocas empresas; en el despojo del medio ambiente y en la destrucción de la naturaleza para lucro de muy pocos y en perjuicio de la inmensa mayoría de la humanidad.

Por desgracia, la humanidad sigue de espalda al hecho de que necesitamos vivir y coexistir en armonía entre todos nosotros y en armonía con la naturaleza que nos cobija, pero a pesar de ello y por fortuna, hay personas y artistas que se distinguen por acercar a nuestra comprensión los motivos y razones de todo esto, o al menos cuyo empeño es hacernos entender el significado de los aconteceres de la vida a través de la propia expresión de su creatividad.

Durante muchos meses de nuestra existencia la pandemia nos obligó a permanecer distanciados los unos de los otros y este hecho fue el que inspiró la serie Detached, in Harmony del fotógrafo Brad Walls (1992, Sidney, Australia).

Sus imágenes inspiradas en la fotografía de moda de los años 40 del siglo pasado desprenden una clara naturaleza conceptual y están realizadas por medio de drones. Con ellas trata de mostrarnos lo distante y redundante que se había convertido nuestra vida durante esos meses de confinamiento y separación, utilizando para ello la repetición, la simetría de las figuras, el espacio negativo entre ellas y la posición estática de las mismas.

Imágenes que enfatizan la soledad y la oscuridad de aquella época de pandemia. Soledad y oscuridad que desafortunadamente en estos días volvemos a tener presentes.

“Detached, in Harmony” fue mi intento de producir una serie de arte conceptual únicamente con un dron. La fotografía conceptual se realiza principalmente con cámaras manuales, pero quería mostrar el valor de un punto de vista alternativo para transmitir una historia significativa, perfecta para la pandemia, creo. En términos de relación con mis otros trabajos, está en línea con mi estética, pero tiene una historia más profunda, que es totalmente nueva para mi trabajo.- Brad Walls.

Sometimes we cannot find the meaning of life and in many occasions we find it difficult and complex to try to discover the whys and wherefores of the events that arise in our existence.

During the last few years the whole of humanity has been involved, to a greater or lesser extent, by events that have largely overwhelmed the capacity of any human being to try to understand what was happening.

We have been stunned and terrified by the great economic crisis of 2008, then the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 and now very recently, just over a month ago, Putin’s war with the invasion of Ukraine that has destabilized globalization and the world economy.

We are still determined to maintain a system of life based on the ferocious consumption of goods and services; on the immoral obtaining of profits that sometimes exceed 1000 or 2000 percent in favor of a few companies; on the plundering of the environment and the destruction of nature for the profit of a very few and to the detriment of the vast majority of humanity.

Unfortunately, humanity continues to turn its back on the fact that we need to live and coexist in harmony among all of us and in harmony with the nature that shelters us, but in spite of this and fortunately, there are people and artists who distinguish themselves by bringing closer to our understanding the reasons and motives of all this, or at least whose endeavor is to make us understand the meaning of the events of life through the very expression of their creativity.

For many months of our existence the pandemic forced us to remain distanced from each other and it was this fact that inspired the series «Detached, in Harmony» by photographer Brad Walls (1992, Sydney, Australia).

His images, inspired by the fashion photography of the 1940s, have a clear conceptual nature and are shot using drones. With them he tries to show us how distant and redundant our lives had become during those months of confinement and separation, using repetition, the symmetry of the figures, the negative space between them and their static position.

Images that emphasize the loneliness and darkness of that time of pandemic. Loneliness and darkness that unfortunately in these days we have again present.

«Detached, in Harmony» was my attempt at producing a conceptual fine art series solely with a drone. Conceptual photography is mostly shot on handheld cameras, but I wanted to showcase the value of an alternate viewpoint to convey a meaningful story – perfect for the pandemic, I believe. In terms of relating it to my other works, it’s in line with my aesthetic but it has a deeper story, which is entirely new for my work”.- Brad Walls.
