I’ve always understood photography as an expression of thought, as a word in a form of truly artistic language, and I’ve always believed in photography’s capacity for fiction, storytelling, narration, and allegory. I’ve never ceased to be convinced that images offer us sensitive semantic structures that don’t present the real world as it is, but rather offer us a walk along the border between wakefulness and sleep, between light and shadow, between opacity and transparency. In reality, the very immobility of the photographic image lies in its inability to faithfully represent the world, because it is precisely in this rigidity that its predisposition to imaginative and poetic drift lies.
But I have also always been convinced that photography, as Jean Baudrillard aptly said, is silence because it alone makes it possible for us to traverse the world in silence. It is truly a silence capable of making us hear the muteness of reality, of making us listen to ourselves, but also—as he himself added—photography is immobility because it is only through immobility that things dream and that we dream. Silence and imagination, the antechambers of the illusory, perhaps the last possibility we have left to halt the vertigo of the world.
Céline Domas’s “Perfect doomy world” series is structured as a narrative constructed on a constant journey through many cities, countries, places, and corners of our planet, a vast journey in search of an unknown event. It is not a journey toward something tangible and real, but rather toward the very encounter with that which can only be recognized when it is found. We are not witnessing the search for difference in a uniform and unitary whole, but rather the uncertain flash that illuminates a moment of harmony in the entire universe of things.
Her images do not seek to confirm recollections and memories that could attest to their presence here or there, but rather simply emerge as random and fortuitous experiences of each present moment, enclosing within themselves a story with a beginning, middle, and end, as if they were celluloid frames that could describe the entirety of a film. Unique, solitary, strangely beautiful, disturbingly mysterious pieces in which it seems—at once—that everything has happened and everything is yet to happen.
“A dark and perfect world. It all begins with a dream… I have always been fascinated by dark atmospheres, those that immerse the environment in an atmosphere so special it disturbs the senses, a melancholy that moves me deeply. Certain elements envelop places, erasing details. From this austerity, «the essential» remains. Guided by my feelings, I wander for hours in a chosen solitude. Silence, alone, accompanies me. Then comes the moment of introspection. And this conclusion: «In the end, I am just a shadow among others.» From contemplation, a poetic experience is born that reveals emotions. My photographs offer a dreamlike vision of the space I travel through, where reality and illusion merge”. – Céline Domas.
