No es fácil escribir sobre la Navidad en los tiempos actuales. Ya sé que se trata de un tiempo en el que cada cultura y cada país la celebra de modos y formas distintas en función de su tradición, creencias e historia.
Y no es fácil hacerlo, no tanto por la variedad y naturaleza de sus celebraciones como por el simple hecho de que escribir o hacer un mensaje sobre la Navidad, en gran manera , resulta un ejercicio redundante por decir todo lo que ya conocemos.
El mundo sigue manteniendo un sistema de vida creado por nosotros y que se sustenta en una alocada producción de bienes y servicios y en el consumo feroz de los mismos, y seguimos sin querer enfrentarnos al hecho de que dicho sistema agota los recursos del planeta destruyendo la naturaleza, el medio ambiente y el clima.
Soportamos, de forma desigual e injusta, según qué continente y país la sufra, una pandemia que ha movilizado ingentes recursos económicos e incontables medios científicos en todo el planeta, no tanto para garantizar la salud de todos los seres humanos como para asegurar que ese agotado sistema económico de vida siga funcionando a pleno rendimiento y generando grandes beneficios a los laboratorios a los que entre todos hemos pagado su investigación.
Los seres humanos somos especialistas en crear males para destruir todo aquello de bueno que tenemos en nuestra propia naturaleza humana: la guerra, la rivalidad, la vanagloria, la mentira, la calumnia, la falta de generosidad y de perdonar, la envidia, el individualismo radical, el fanatismo, la murmuración, y tantos otros males…
Necesitamos darle un nuevo sentido a nuestras vidas en medio de la tensa existencia que hemos creado. Precisamos que el espíritu de la Navidad no sea una cuestión de varios días sino la forma permanente de vivir un día tras otro.
Tenemos que armonizar todos nuestros corazones y erradicar la extendida idea de que no precisamos los unos de los otros, de que no necesitamos de los demás y debemos expulsar de nuestras mentes el yo egoísta que se cree autosuficiente.
Debemos de ser uno y ser todos a la vez y a pesar del ruido, del caos, del miedo, de la falsa información y de la falta de objetividad que nos imponen los medios de comunicación y las redes sociales, tenemos que saber que sólo existe un camino, aquel que nos deberá conducir al encuentro de nuevas formas y modelos que nos permitan reedificar un nuevo Humanismo.
Un camino que nos lleve a nuevos idearios que posibiliten una nueva ética más solidaria, más cívica y más respetuosa con todos los seres humanos sin excepción, en definitiva, un camino en armonía con la naturaleza y con nuestro entorno, todo aquello que garantice un mejor futuro para la humanidad.
Tenemos que dejar de creer que somos los propietarios de un presente pletórico y eterno, una utopía del ahora y el aquí que ha hipotecado el porvenir de las futuras generaciones.
Espero y deseo que esta Navidad sea mejor para todas y todos nosotros así como para nuestras familias y amigos, con un especial recuerdo y dedicatoria para aquellas personas y familias, conciudadanos isleños, que lo han perdido todo a causa del volcán de La Palma.
También espero y deseo que el Año Nuevo sea un año en el que sepamos encontrar la senda hacia la paz, la armonía y, sobre todo, el disfrutar de salud y de bienestar individual y común.

It is not easy to write about Christmas in today’s times. I know that it is a time when every culture and every country celebrates it in different ways and forms according to its traditions, beliefs and history.
And it is not easy to do so not so much because of the variety and nature of their celebrations, but because of the simple fact that writing or making a message about Christmas is largely a redundant exercise in saying everything we already know.
The world continues to support a system of life created by us and based on a crazy production of goods and services and on the ferocious consumption of them, and we are still unwilling to face the fact that this system depletes the planet’s resources, destroying nature, the environment and the climate.
We endure, unequally and unfairly, depending on which continent and country suffers it, a pandemic that has mobilised enormous economic resources and countless scientific means all over the planet, not so much to guarantee the health of all human beings as to ensure that this exhausted economic system of life continues to function at full capacity and to generate huge profits for the laboratories that we have all paid for their research.
We human beings are specialists in creating evils in order to destroy all that is good in our own human nature: war, rivalry, vainglory, lies, slander, lack of generosity and forgiveness, envy, radical individualism, fanaticism, backbiting, and so many other evils….
We need to give a new meaning to our lives in the midst of the tense existence we have created. We need to make the spirit of Christmas not a matter of a few days but the permanent way of living one day after another.
We need to harmonise all our hearts and eradicate the widespread idea that we do not need each other, that we do not require each other and we must expel from our minds the selfish self that believes itself to be self-sufficient.
We must be one and be all at the same time and despite the noise, the chaos, the fear, the false information and the lack of objectivity imposed on us by the media and social networks, we must know that there is only one path, the one that will lead us to find new forms and models that will allow us to rebuild a new Humanism.
A path that will lead us to new ideologies that will make possible a new ethic that is more supportive, more civic and more respectful of all human beings without exception, in short, a path in harmony with nature and with our environment, everything that guarantees a better future for humanity.
We have to stop believing that we are the owners of a plethoric and eternal present, a utopia of the here and now that has mortgaged the future of future generations.
I hope and wish that this Christmas will be better for all of us and for our families and friends, with a special remembrance and dedication to those people and families, fellow islanders, who have lost everything because of the volcano on La Palma.
I also hope and wish that the New Year will be a year in which we find the path to peace, harmony and, above all, the enjoyment of health and individual and common well-being.
