Leigh Schneider “Behind the darkness”

We live in a world in which both information and disinformation have accelerated exponentially and in which, through digital media, it is now impossible to distinguish between truth and lies, between the real and the unreal.

Hoaxes, lies and fake news are not intended to deceive or confuse us, but rather to prevent us from distinguishing between truth and lies, to prevent us from distinguishing between good and evil, from imagining, from dreaming, from moving and acting.

We tend to call real everything that we truly believe to exist and unreal everything that we consider to be only the fruit of our imagination, of our fantasies. But we also tend to forget that both the real and the unreal arise from our minds, from the activity of our brain, from our thoughts. To stop thinking is to die.

There are artists who do not believe that the real and the unreal are two separate opposites, for they are not only convinced that they are strongly intertwined, but they also maintain that there are realities that we do not see but that we sense.

The photographic work of Leigh Schneider (New Zealand) aims to show us that there is more to life than what we see with the naked eye. That we need to look not only with our eyes but also with our imagination to find light where we think there is only darkness and thus be able to perceive new places, different spaces, immense worlds and thousands of stories.

Her images invite us to take a journey between the frontier of the real and the unreal. To dream and let our imagination unfold in the construction of new and better worlds, worlds in which human beings can realise their full potential. In short, what Leigh Schneider wants to tell us is that to imagine is to dream and that if we finally stop dreaming we will cease to exist.

“While my work might appear on the surface to be dark aesthetically, the core of my concepts focusses on the light. I’m inspired by the idea of a world beyond what we immediately see, as well as human emotion and the capacity we all have for transformation and growth. For this reason, I don’t really think of my work as ‘dark,’ as much as “stealthily optimistic”.- Leigh Schneider.
