The physical, psychological and social consequences of the global pandemic that destabilised the foundations on which the world’s societies were built are manifold. After-effects, embers and residues that still persist today, despite the daily reality.

The approach to the multiple aspects that make up that extraordinary event cannot be circumscribed to an immediate, objective and rapid reading of the events that took place because each one of us lived the experience from different perceptions and conditioning factors, and at the same time assumed it as a direct subject of it, so that to limit in time the reflections that derive from such an event is a futile and vain task.

The artist’s gaze can sublimate reality at the same time as it can dwarf it, but it is unquestionable that it is based on the interpretation he makes of the facts, in such a way that it can be tinged with multiple and varied personal and subjective nuances that far from exposing a biased vision of what happens, what it does is open up the possibilities of the spectator’s gaze to a universe different and distinct from the one represented, and this is precisely where the greatness of the artistic work is born.

There are artistic projects and proposals that transcend the time in which they are carried out, which makes them a sort of window through which to look at the world, whatever the time or date in which they are contemplated, because no matter how we look at them, they always have a halo of validity.

The series “Terza Vita” by the artist Mar Sáez (Murcia, 1983, Spain) seems to me to be one of those windows through which we can look at ourselves and contemplate ourselves at any time and age. Her images propose an approach to the human being, especially to young people, from an almost invasive proximity in a time in which we are all trying to recover from the consequences of the global pandemic.

“Terza Vita” or “Third Life” not only invites us to contemplate the overcoming of a traumatic event, but also to appreciate the capacity of the human being to emotionally overcome such traumas, overcoming the nostalgia of a stable and comfortable past to project ourselves from the present towards a better future.

“The project considers the fertile potential of new interpersonal relationships after a two-year break. Rome is the setting from which I decided to observe the people and, above all, the young lovers, on the popular beaches of Ostia that were being recomposed in a city criss-crossed by its monumentality and its artistic representations. A territory usually alive that, in a first stage of recovery, shone as an unrecognisable, unknown space; a place full of empty spaces and far from tourism”.- Mar Sáez.
