Maureen Denny «Altered Pixels»

Siempre he creído y he dicho que la fotografía no es la realidad sino su representación y que la imagen fotográfica no es más que una puerta abierta por la que adentrarnos en un mundo de luces y sombras, de opacidades y transparencias, de certezas y ficciones.

La fotografía es una forma de lenguaje artístico con el que podemos expresar nuestras experiencias, nuestras creencias, nuestros anhelos, nuestras inquietudes, nuestras denuncias y nuestros deseos, y ello bajo formas diversas que podrían ser las del relato, la narración, la ficción o la alegoría.

Muchas veces lo cierto tiende a difuminarse de tal manera que entonces se produce el nacimiento de lo imaginario y es en ese mismo instante en el que el mundo adquiere un vértigo en el que lo real y lo irreal se confunden, como si una sombra nos impidiera ver lo existente, lo verídico y lo auténtico. Un instante en el que surgen paisajes y seres fabulosos que habitan un mundo intemporal, indescifrable, paralelo al nuestro, un mundo ilusorio y fantasioso que nos seduce y permite soñar con otra vida y otros deseos.

Maureen Denny gusta de sentir ese vértigo y pertenece a esa especie rara de fotógrafos que es capaz de ver más allá de lo que sus ojos ven, en realidad ella mira con su mente creativa, ni más ni menos que aquella que le permite formar nuevos universos y producir nuevas realidades con las que confrontar nuestra existencia y nuestro devenir.

Sus imágenes constatan todo aquello que conocemos, incluso lo cotidiano de nuestra vida, pero apenas que nuestra mirada se pose en ellas, de manera atenta, advertiremos la presencia de nuestra propia alteridad, aquella que escondemos en los pliegues de nuestra imaginación y la que solo podemos encontrar en nuestras fantasías.

I have always believed and said that photography is not reality but its representation and that the photographic image is nothing more than an open door through which we can enter a world of light and shadow, of opacities and transparencies, of certainties and fictions.

Photography is a form of artistic language with which we can express our experiences, our beliefs, our yearnings, our concerns, our complaints and our desires, and this under different forms that could be those of story, narration, fiction or allegory.

Often what is true tends to blur in such a way that the imaginary is born, and it is at that very moment that the world acquires a vertigo in which the real and the unreal become confused, as if a shadow were preventing us from seeing what exists, what is true and what is authentic. A moment in which fabulous landscapes and beings emerge that inhabit a timeless, indecipherable world, parallel to our own, an illusory and fantastical world that seduces us and allows us to dream of another life and other desires.

Maureen Denny likes to feel this vertigo and belongs to that rare species of photographer who is capable of seeing beyond what her eyes see, in fact she looks with her creative mind, nothing more and nothing less than that which allows her to form new universes and produce new realities with which to confront our existence and our future.

Her images show everything we know, even the everyday of our lives, but as soon as our gaze rests on them, attentively, we will notice the presence of our own otherness, that which we hide in the folds of our imagination and that which we can only find in our fantasies.
