La percepción del mundo y de la realidad se ha vuelto algo muy complejo y contradictorio de manera que, hoy en día, nos encontramos con la enorme dificultad de distinguir entre lo ficticio y lo real. Es así, como ciertas prácticas fotográficas se insertan en esta difícil comprensión del mundo y de la realidad, cuyo resultado deviene en una fotografía donde se opera un desplazamiento de lo neto hacia lo fluido e impreciso.
Buena parte de la fotografía actual se encuentra empeñada no tanto en abandonar lo real como en despojarse del realismo que toda una cultura fotográfica ha vinculado al medio como su exclusivo atributo. Si el arte y la fotografía son experiencia de lo real y hoy no podemos distinguir entre realidad y ficción, la fotografía ha tenido que intensificar el abandono de su pretendido atributo, manifestando y exaltando primero, la trama y el sedimento, la fluidez, lo incierto, lo opaco y la oscuridad, todo lo que se opusiera a aquella atribución, para, en segundo término, acceder a nuevos ámbitos donde ver legitimada su vinculación a la precariedad y la imprecisión, lo poético, lo imaginario, la ficción, lo ilusorio y lo simbólico, ni más ni menos que aquello que le ha permitido constituirse en un auténtico material artístico de contornos y perfiles no acotados, un material donde manifestar su auténtica naturaleza contradictoria y ambigua.
Hay viajes que se hacen con un destino final, otros se hacen sabiendo que tarde o temprano se llegará a algún lugar, o también los hay que son de ida y vuelta. Sin embargo, en algunas ocasiones, como en el caso de Stéphane Mahé, no solamente se trata de partir o de llegar a algún sitio o a algún lugar sino que simplemente se trata de salir con rumbo a lo ignoto, a lo desconocido, hacia aquello que aún no sabemos que existe, que está por descubrirse, tal vez aquello que intuimos y que nos perturba el alma por tratar de conocerlo. Normalmente ese tipo de extraños viajes no tienen fin, percibes que un día sin saber cómo ni porqué lo iniciaste, pero no conoces cuando acabará.
En su serie Somewhere sus imágenes adquieren la forma de sutiles trazos que nos narran nuestra existencia y nuestra frágil presencia en el mundo difuminando nuestra noción de la realidad, descifrando leves diferencias que acaso nos permitan identificar lo que vemos para después transportarnos a través de nuestra imaginación hasta un universo de enigmática belleza donde mora la poesía.

The perception of the world and of reality has become very complex and contradictory so that today we find it extremely difficult to distinguish between the fictitious and the real. Thus, certain photographic practices are inserted into this difficult understanding of the world and reality, the result of which becomes a photograph where a shift from the obvious to the fluid and imprecise takes place.
A large part of today’s photography is committed not so much to abandoning the real but to stripping itself of the realism that an entire photographic culture has linked to the medium as its exclusive attribute. If art and photography are experiences of the real and today we cannot distinguish between reality and fiction, photography has had to intensify the abandonment of its supposed attribute, manifesting and exalting first, the plot and the sediment, the fluidity, the uncertain, the opaque and the darkness, everything that opposes that attribution, and then, in the second term, access to new areas where its link to precariousness and imprecision, the poetic, the imaginary, the fiction, the illusory and the symbolic, is legitimised, no more and no less than that which has allowed it to become a genuine artistic material with undefined outlines and profiles, a material where its true contradictory and ambiguous nature is manifested.
There are journeys that are made with a final destination, others are made knowing that sooner or later one will arrive somewhere, or there are also those that are round trips. On some occasions, however, as in the case of Stephane Mahé, it is not just a matter of leaving or arriving somewhere or someplace, but simply of setting out for the unknowable, for the unknown, for that which we do not yet know exists, which is yet to be discovered, perhaps that which we intuit and which disturbs our soul in trying to know. Normally this type of strange journey has no end, you perceive that one day without knowing how or why you started it, but you do not know when it will end.
In his series Somewhere his images take the form of subtle traces that tell us about our existence and our fragile presence in the world, blurring our notion of reality, deciphering slight differences that may allow us to identify what we see and then transport us through our imagination to a universe of enigmatic beauty where poetry dwells.
